Among the presidents throughout the Progressive Era, Theodore Roosevelt led the United States of America through a group of dramatic changes that interrupted the lives and ideologies that People in the usa during the time had been more than familiarized with. Industrialization, women's avis, the intimate revolution, imperialism, and " muckraking” journalism were just a few of the debatable, yet significant characteristics with this era. However , perhaps among the largest and many vital affects during this time period came from the outdoors. Immigration was an issue that Roosevelt himself addressed rather perceptibly in the paper entitled " Authentic Americanism, ” which first appeared in a journal called The Forum in April, 1894. However , not necessarily the idea of migrants that vexed Roosevelt; somewhat it was his concern and fear of the possibility that the increase in immigration of foreign persons and nationalities would culminate the concept of American patriotism, or perhaps " Americanism” as a whole. This paper is going to analyze different elements of Roosevelt's " Accurate Americanism” by exploring the historic context in the document, highlighting Americanism while Roosevelt explicates it, watching the rhetoric used through the document, and discerning Roosevelt's intended audience.

During the last 10-15 years of the Progressive Time, more than 15 million migrants arrived in the United States— a number comparable to the total quantity of immigrants that arrived in the prior 40 years. In 1910, 3/4 of New York City's human population was made from either migrants or first generation People in the usa. Unlike previous immigrants, the vast majority of newcomers during this period came from non-English speaking Countries in europe. Immigrants generally traveled in from the southern part of and eastern European countries, which include Poland, Italy and The ussr. Seeing that almost all foreign nationals were in dire require of careers, they maintained to settle in urban areas where jobs could possibly be easily located. Often times, foreign nationals would decide in areas dominated by other foreign nationals who speak the same dialect or were from the same country. As a result, the towns became more congested than in the past, and city services weren't always successful in checking up on the rise of newbies. Although the majority of immigrants could find and pursue careers, many of them were jobs that native-born Americans refused to rehearse. Regardless of their very own jobs, home for that pet, and/or ethnicities, immigrants grew to play a massive part in lots of areas of American society. In accordance to Roosevelt, Americanism is actually a characteristic of the people Americans whom perform all their allotted duties by facing them progressively and bravely, seeing but not fearing the hazards (6). This can be a sense of brotherhood. As Roosevelt claims in his paper: " Above all, we must stand shoulder to shoulder, not really asking as to the ancestry or perhaps creed of our comrades [immigrants], yet only demanding that they maintain very real truth Americans, and this we all come together, heart, palm, and mind, for the honor and the greatness of our common country (6). ”

Roosevelt categorizes Americanism in three amounts, types, or categories. The first kind of Americanism, while Roosevelt points out, is customizing government strategies and ways to fit the United States' unique demands rather than imitating those of different countries (1). " It can be merely folly blindly to copy their examples without reference to our very own totally different circumstances. We shall under no circumstances achieve authentic greatness, neither reach the lofty best which the founders and preservers of our enormous Federal Republic have arranged before all of us, unless we are Americans in heart and soul, in spirit and purpose, keenly alive to the responsibility implied in the very brand of American, and...
